What is the problem with words?
Once you name something you limit your understanding. And this is more profound the more specific you get.
This is true in the tension between modern medicine and alternative healings. In this article there is a set up and then the connection to the problem between medicine and alternatives. So, stick with me.
I remember someone laughing at the Bible saying that Jonah was swallowed by a great fish one time and a whale another.
We have since Biblical times classified/named mammals as different than fish. And as a result we therefore think today a whale is not a fish.
In ancient times if something lived in the water and moved, it was a fish. They might specifically say what kind of fish but it was a fish. So, for them it was a fish and it was a whale. Not a problem.
Instead of trying to understand the use of words in old time, my friend had limited the possibility of seeing what was said.
Modern doctors have classified medical treatments into certain categories. They have limited their ability to see clearly other options. They only see what their naming allows. They have set their parameters of healing in the naming, like my friend had been limited by his classification of fishes and mammals.
One famous Cristian counselor was given a case of a lady who had gone catatonic after a shocking experience. The doctors had done all the test and could not find any physical reason for the condition and had basically thrown their hands up.
The family in desperation went to the seminary professor of counseling. He was well aware that the answer in this case was not with modern medicine. So, he thinking outside their classification/naming came up with a treatment.
The doctors laughed at his treatment, but they figured that it would do no harm. Therefore, being at as loss as to what to do, they stood back. They were free expressing their doubts to the family.
He proceeded with the agreement and participation of the family.
He with all the available family went into the room. The doctors had told him that she could hear him.
This is a thumbnail of what happened.
After introducing himself, he told her the doctor say there is nothing wrong with you physically. It is like you have chosen this. So, he said that he and the family were going to respect her free will choice to be catatonic.
He told her that they would not disturb her chosen catatonic state. We will not come in and give you water or food he informed her. He kindly told her that since she had chosen to be this way they would not clean her up after she urinated or had a bowel movement. She could just lie in her own excrement, if that is her choice.
He told her then if she wanted something to eat or drink, she could choose to come into the kitchen. If she wanted to go to the restroom, she could get up and go. Or if she preferred, she could just lie there. It was her free will.
He then told her that they would respect her freewill and leave her alone to express her freewill.
They then respectfully left the room and shut the door.
In about 45 minutes she got up and exercised her freewill to return to normal living.
The doctors were blindsided by their classification/naming of what is medical practice.
This is probably a major reason why many doctors dismiss out of hand alternatives.
